Leyton and Leytonstone are parts of the London Borough of Waltham Forest and lie just beyond the southern fringes of Epping Forest. They are very much Victorian developments, having been transformed, in the fifty years or so following the arrival of the railway, from two largely rural villages to a single dormitory suburb for London. Further changes followed in the twentieth century: buildings disappeared as a result of bombs in two world wars; shops came and went (including the famous Bearmans department store); the workhouse became a hospital, which in turn closed; the railway became part of the London Underground network; and, a giant lido was built (and later closed and filled in). This book depicts the changes that have occurred in Leyton and Leytonstone over the last century through the use of old postcards and photographs and modern-day views of the same locations. It will be of interest to all who know the area.
